The action (karma) of sacrifice (yajña), charity (dāna), and austerity (tapas), is not to be abandoned, but it must be performed. Sacrifice, charity, and also austerity, are purifiers for the wise (manīṣiṇām).
Action in sacrifice, charity, and penance is to be performed, not relinquished—for wise men, they are acts of sanctity.
(5) [Works of] sacrifice, the gift of alms, and works of penance are not to be surrendered; these must most certainly be done: it is sacrifice, alms-giving, and ascetic practice that purify the wise.
18.5 The practice of sacrifice, charity and austerity is not to be abandoned; it is surely to be undertaken. Sacrifice, charity and austerity are verily the purifiers of the wise.
