That happiness (sukha) which bewilders the self (ātman), both in the beginning and in its consequence, Arising from sleep, laziness, and negligence, that is declared to be of darkness (tāmasa).
The joy arising from sleep, laziness, and negligence, self-deluding from beginning to end, is said to be darkly inert.
(39) That pleasure which at first and in the sequel leads the self astray, which derives from sleep and sloth and fecklessness, has been declared as [pleasure] in Darkness' way.
18.39 That joy is said to be born of tams which, both in the beginning and in the sequel, is delusive to oneself and arises from sleep, laziness and inadvertence.
18.39 That pleasure which, at the beginning and at the end, deludes the self, through sleep, sloth and error --- is declared to be Tamasika.
18.39 That happiness which at first as well as in the sequel deludes the self, and which arises from sleep, indolence and heedlessness -- that is declared to be Tamasic.
