Those people who undergo terrible austerity (tapas), which is not enjoined by the scriptures (śāstra), Joined with hypocrisy (dambha) and ego (ahaṅkāra), endowed with the force of desire (kāma) and passion (rāga),
Men who practice horrific penances that go against traditional norms are trapped in hypocrisy and individuality, overwhelmed by the emotion of desire.
(5-6) And this know too. Some men there are who, without regard to Scripture's ordinance, savagely mortify [their flesh], buoyed up by hypocrisy and self-regard, yielding to the violence of passion and desire, and so torment the mass of [living] beings whose home their body is, the witless fools,—find [with them] Me Myself within [that same] body abiding: how devilish their intentions!
17.5 Those persons who, given to ostentation and pride, and possessed of passion, attachment and strength, undertake severe austerities not sanctioned in the scriptures;

17.5 Those men who practice terrific austerities not enjoined by the scriptures, given to hypocrisy and egoism, impelled by the force of lust and attachment.
