The Blessed Lord (Śrī Bhagavān) said: With roots above and branches below, they say the Ashvattha tree is imperishable (avyayam). Whose leaves are the Vedic hymns (chandāṃsi), he who knows it, he is the knower of the Veda (vedavit).
Roots in the air, branches below, the tree of life is unchanging, they say; its leaves are hymns, and he who knows it knows sacred lore.
The Blessed Lord said: (1) With roots above and boughs beneath, they say, the undying fig-tree [stands]: its leaves are the Vedic hymns: who knows it knows the Veda.
15.1 The Blessed Lord said -- They say that the peepul Tree, which has its roots upward and the branches downward, and of which the Vedas are the leaves, is imperishable. He who realizes it is knower of the Vedas.
15.1 The Lord said -- They speak of an immutable Aśvattha tree with its roots above and branches below. Its leaves are the Vedas. He who knows it knows the Vedas.
15.1 The Blessed Lord said -- They (the wise) speak of the indestructible peepul tree having its root above and branches below, whose leaves are the meters or hymns: he who knows it is a knower of the Vedas.
