"It must be given," thus the charity (dāna) that is given, to one who does no service in return, In the proper place, at the proper time, and to a worthy recipient (pātre), that charity is remembered as of goodness (sāttvika).
Given in due time and place to a fit recipient who can give no advantage, charity is remembered as lucid.
(20) Alms given because to give alms is a [sacred] duty to one from whom no favor is expected in return at the [right] place and time and to a [fit] recipient,—this is called alms [giving] in Goodness’ way.
17.20 That gift is referred to as born of sattva which gift is given with the idea that it ought to be given, to one who will not serve in return, and at the (proper) place, (proper) time and to a (proper) person.
17.20 Gifts given with the feeling, that it is one's own duty to give to one who makes no return, at the proper place and time to the deserving person --- that is said to be Sāttvika.
17.20 That gift which is given to one who does nothing in return, knowing it to be a duty to give in a fit place and time to a worthy person, that gift is held to be Sattvic.
