From goodness (sattva) is born knowledge (jñāna), and from passion (rajas) greed indeed. Negligence and delusion come from darkness (tamas), and ignorance (ajñāna) as well.
From lucidity knowledge is born; from passion comes greed; from dark inertia come negligence, delusion, and ignorance.
(17) From Goodness wisdom springs, from Passion greed, from Darkness fecklessness, delusion, and ignorance—how not?
14.17 From sattva is born knowledge [Knowledge acquired through the sense-organs.], and from rajas, verily, avarice. From tamas are born inadvertence and delusion as also ignorance, to be sure.
14.17 From the Sattva arises knowledge, and from Rajas greed, from Tamas arise negligence and delusion, and, indeed ignorance.
