Absence of light and absence of activity, negligence and delusion as well; These are born when darkness (tamas) has increased, O joy of the Kurus (Kurunandana).
When dark inertia increases, obscurity and inactivity, negligence and delusion, arise.
(13) When Darkness is surging up, these [states] arise: unlighted [darkness], unwillingness to act, fecklessness, delusion.
14.13 O descendant of the Kuru dynasty, when tamas predominates these surely [i.e. without exception.-M.S.] come into being: nondiscrimination and inactivity, inadvertence and delusion.
14.13 Non-illumination, inactivity, negligence and even delusion --- these arise, O Arjuna, when Tamas prevails.
14.13 Darkness, inertness, heedlessness and delusion -- these arise when Tamas is predominant, O Arjuna.
