College Class Report: Hinduism and Philosophy Review Game

Synopsis

This class session began with a brief meditation led by Brad. The main activity was a team-based review game, formatted similarly to Jeopardy, covering concepts from Hinduism and related philosophical ideas. Brad explained the rules: teams would choose categories, answer questions within a time limit, and could steal points if the initial team failed. Topics included Greek philosophical terms, details about Krishna (his mother Yashoda, the Rāslīlā dance, his love for butter, subduing Kaliya), Mahāvākyas (Great Sayings) from the Upaniṣads, the Ṣaḍ Darśanas (six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy like Nyāya, Vaiśeṣika, Mīmāṃsā), key figures and texts (Durgā, Sītā, Rāvaṇa, Rāmāyaṇam, Purāṇas, Upaniṣads), and concepts like Brahman and Jñāna Mārga. Team 13 emerged as the winner. As a fun conclusion, Brad performed some TikTok/Fortnite dances and a short rap for the class. The session ended with logistical discussions regarding office hours and a podcast assignment due after spring break.

Meditation

[00:00] Student 1: Let's start. Let's start as you. I won't do the I won't do the bowl. Well, let's just start with a moment of meditation.

[00:09] Brad: Close, close all screens, get everything out of your head. Clear your minds. Be present in the now.

[00:24] (Silence)

[01:04] Brad: Let's take one breath together. Go ahead and breathe in.

[01:09] Brad: And let it all out.

Explanation of Review Game Rules

[01:14] Brad: Word. So, today we're doing a little bit of Līlā, having a play, play day. And yeah. So, I think the best way to do it is maybe kind of what we did in the previous class was we'll just go, we'll go in team order, start with 11 and go up through 18, and then we'll reverse and go 18 back to 11 and just kind of do back and forth like that. And so when it's your turn, when it's your team's turn, you can pick any category. We got to put away all notes and screens and everything. So no no notes or anything. It's just review. It's also just for fun.

[02:03] Brad: So when it's your turn, when it's your team's turn, you can pick a category. They're kind of a little bit from easiest to hardest, but not really. And so they're really just going to all be one point. So everything's one point.

[02:21] Brad: And if you, if your team, we'll give you like 30 seconds or so. You know. But if your team can't come up with the answer in 30 seconds, then we'll go with whoever's hands up. And if there's multiple hands up, then I'll roll a D8.

[02:40] Brad: Unless there's two, huh?

[02:42] Student 2: A D8?

[02:43] Brad: D8?

[02:44] Student 2: D8? Not a gamer?

[02:46] Brad: A D8, yeah.

[02:48] Student 2: Clearly not.

[02:50] Brad: D8. But, I don't know. If there's only two people, then we'll do we'll do rock paper scissors.

[03:04] Brad: The winner, I'm open to I'm open to suggestions, but the plan was winning team gets to choose a, you know, Tik Tok dance or Fortnite dance or something for me to do. Or I do also have just doing Fortnite dance.

[03:26] Student 3: Is there a final jeopardy Brad?

[03:30] Brad: Huh? Regular teams, your regular teams.

[03:34] Student 4: Wait, do you actually have...

[03:37] Brad: So you only have three people, it's okay. In the last class, the winning team only had three members. So, you know.

[03:45] Student 3: Brad, is there a final jeopardy?

[03:46] Brad: There's not.

[03:47] Student 3: Okay.

[03:48] Brad: So it's it. Yeah.

[03:50] Student 5: That's important...

[03:52] Brad: There are There are a few questions, a handful of questions that may not have been covered yet. Actually, I think everything has been covered, but some of it's like a little obscure. But but those things that are a little obscure are things that I want to emphasize and underscore. And we will play this game with these questions again later in the semester. So, you know, learn what you miss and then next time we play it, then you'll have those under your belt. Yeah? Cool. Any other questions?

[04:27] Student 6: No.

[04:28] Brad: All right, roll. Let's let's roll it then.

Team Formation / Play-Doh Distribution

[04:33] Student 7: Should we assemble into our teams or?

[04:35] Brad: Yeah, it'd be good to get get near your teams. It'd be good. Yeah. Get near your teams. Also I did bring Play-Doh if anybody would just like to play with Play-Doh during class. Feel free.

[04:51] Student 8: Wait, which which?

[04:54] Brad: You can take more than one. Sorry. I don't think... Yeah.

[05:04] Student 9: Can I get...

[05:06] (Chatter and movement as students get Play-Doh)

[05:29] Brad: Also, I'm slightly worried about spacing.

[05:33] (Continued chatter and sounds of Play-Doh)

Review Game Start

[06:09] Brad: Okay. Team...

[06:14] Brad: Team 11? Is that you? Yeah.

[06:23] Brad: Okay. All right, so we're going to have team 11 choose a choose a category and we'll for these we'll just go one two three going order. Wait, they're all with one. So team 11 will choose the category. They'll have like 30 seconds or so and then if they can't come up with it, then we'll do either first hand or or if there's multiple hands then I'll then I'll roll the D8. Is that good?

[06:48] Brad: So Jorge, Andrika and Jose?

Game Round 1 (Teams 11-18)

[07:02] Student 10 (Team 11): Can we try the Greek to mean one?

[07:04] Brad: Yeah.

[07:07] Brad: Approaching God through negation or the removal of human attributes. This Greek word corresponds to the Latin phrase via negativa and the Sanskrit term Nirguṇa Brahman.

[07:22] Brad: It's a little bit of a tough one.

[07:24] Student 11: Is it one pointer?

[07:39] Student 10 (Team 11): No confidence though.

[07:45] Student 12: It's been 30 seconds.

[07:46] Brad: It has not been. It's been 20 seconds.

[07:54] Brad: Playing the mind game. Okay, five seconds.

[08:01] Brad: Anybody? Anybody have a steal?

[08:08] Student 13: Go Jack.

[08:12] Brad: Yeah. No notes. No notes. No notes. No notes. Anybody have a steal?

[08:19] Student 14: Do it.

[08:20] Student 15 (Team 13): Yeah.

[08:21] Brad: Yeah, there you go. Apophatic or apophasis. (Point for Team 13)

[08:25] (Student reactions)

[08:30] Student 16: I'm between 11...

[08:33] Student 17: I think if it's...

[08:36] Brad: Translate... negativity...

[08:39] Student 18: I was thinking about...

[08:40] Brad: Okay. 12. Ella, Luca, George, Aubry?

[08:47] Student 19 (Team 12): Wait, what were the categories? Let's do the Krishna. Yes, I agree.

[08:54] Brad: Krishna one?

[08:56] Brad: This is the name of Krishna's mother who loved to watch Krishna play.

[09:02] Student 19 (Team 12): Who is Yashoda?

[09:03] Brad: Good. (Point for Team 12)

[09:04] (Student reactions)

[09:08] Brad: Team 13.

[09:13] Student 20 (Team 13): Go for it.

[09:15] Brad: Mahāvākya? This great saying is from the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad.

[09:36] Student 21 (Team 13): I am Brahman.

[09:38] Brad: Yeah, you don't have to say what is. Yeah. Did they get it? They did. Yeah. (Point for Team 13)

[09:44] Student 22: Who was that? 13?

[09:46] Brad: 13. All right.

[09:47] Student 23: All right, got some...

[09:49] Brad: Yeah. Okay. Team 14. Your answers do not have to be in the form of a question.

[09:58] (Laughter)

[10:00] Student 24: That was brutal.

[10:04] Brad: 14?

[10:15] Student 25 (Team 14): Okay, give us two. Ṣaḍ Darśana two.

[10:18] Brad: Ṣaḍ Darśana?

[10:19] Student 25 (Team 14): Yeah.

[10:21] Brad: Two? You want to go jump to two? Okay. Sure. This orthodox Hindu perspective is described as atomism, arguing that universe is composed of indivisible units of matter and energy.

[10:36] Student 26: Cosmos?

[10:41] Brad: Wait, wait, wait. Let's think. No notes.

[10:49] Student 25 (Team 14): I can picture it. I can picture it too. I see it on my page.

[11:00] Student 27: It is...

[11:01] Brad: It literally is.

[11:04] Brad: Five seconds.

[11:05] Student 25 (Team 14): Tapping out.

[11:07] Brad: Tapping out?

[11:09] Student 28: Oh wait.

[11:10] Brad: Anybody have it? Is it the only team? Emily's the only team? Okay, you got to do rock paper scissors then.

[11:18] Student 29: What I said?

[11:19] Brad: Rock paper scissors.

[11:25] Student 19 (Team 12): Is it Vaiśeṣika?

[11:26] Brad: Vaiśeṣika is correct. (Point for Team 12)

[11:28] (Student reactions)

[11:33] Brad: Wait. Okay. I need... Who's gonna go? Okay, Ruby left? What is you? Yeah. (Team 15)

[11:51] Student 30 (Team 15): That was our turn. Krishna Chronicles 2, Divine Play.

[11:59] Brad: Krishna Chronicles... This is the name of the dance that Krishna performed with the Gopīs. The Gopīs are the cowmen, the cowherders. Yeah.

[12:16] Student 31: Are you serious?

[12:28] Brad: No no screens or phones, please. Whoa. Deduction.

[12:37] Student 32: Say it louder...

[12:40] Brad: Okay, anybody want to jump in for the steal?

[12:44] Student 33: Oh shoot.

[12:45] Brad: My bad.

[12:46] Student 30 (Team 15): Rāslīlā.

[12:48] Brad: Okay. (Point for Team 15) Uh, then team 16. Eric, Jaden, Stella, and Luke? Okay, right there. Yep, gotcha.

[13:11] Student 34 (Team 16): Greek three?

[13:15] Brad: Approaching God through positive attributes and description. This Greek word corresponds to the Latin phrase via positiva and the Sanskrit term Saguṇa Brahman.

[13:31] Brad: Yeah, what is it? Feel like this is a gimme for the folks who had me last semester, but...

[13:40] Student 35: Oh, guys.

[13:44] Brad: But it was in the reading for today.

[13:50] Student 36: Is it unfair advantage? I'm not gonna...

[13:54] Brad: No? Okay. Any steals?

[14:04] Brad: It looks like Addison has a... Okay. No?

[14:14] Student 37: What's your answer? ... No one has to know it was you. I'll do it for you.

[14:25] Brad: Huh? No, no. I'm an idiot. What? No? No?

[14:31] Student 38: Yeah?

[14:32] Brad: It's not ontological, right? No, it's not. Cataphasis. Sorry.

[14:38] Student 39: I was about to say that.

[14:40] Brad: Apophatic is not right. Cataphasis is positive descriptions, apophasis is negative descriptions. Yeah. Such as the Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad, right? Three positive descriptions and then a negative description.

[15:06] Brad: You can have all you want. Is it is it is it like throw away dry? No no.

[15:11] Student 40: I just don't like it.

[15:13] Brad: Okay. Okay, team 17. No screens, please. No like literally, no screens ever allowed in my class. Like not ever. Like definitely not twice in one day. Definitely not three times in two classes. So, really, it's time to put phones away, please. Okay, Vanya? Hope that's clear this time. Team 17.

[15:39] Student 41 (Team 17): The path to travel.

[15:41] Brad: Word. The path traveled four? No, the numbers don't really matter, but you can go for that.

[15:48] Student 42: Not really?

[15:49] Brad: Numbers don't matter. No. Everything's one point. Yeah. One of the three paths to salvation. This path of knowledge or wisdom involves studying the Veda and understanding the true nature of reality.

[16:12] Student 43: It's in my notes.

[16:14] Student 41 (Team 17): I know it's in my notes. I can see it.

[16:16] Student 43: It's on my notes. There's a list, like it's one, two, or three.

[16:19] Brad: That's I do when I do oral exams, that's the most common response to every question is it's in my notes. It is, but they still have a few 10 seconds left. Word?

[16:42] Student 41 (Team 17): I don't know.

[16:45] Brad: Okay, I only see Ruby's hand. Yeah.

[16:47] Student 30 (Team 15): It's like the subconscious like nothing, like the nothing in between.

[16:51] Brad: No, I'm looking for a Sanskrit word. I'm literally looking for the Sanskrit word for knowledge.

[16:59] Student 44: Oh.

[17:05] Brad: No one?

[17:07] Student 45: My mom's up?

[17:07] Brad: No. Jñāna Mārga. Jñāna Mārga.

[17:13] (Student reactions)

[17:21] Brad: Okay, 18. Yeah?

[17:28] Student 46: We started at 11.

[17:35] Student 47 (Team 18): Ṣaḍ Darśana one?

[17:40] Brad: Ṣaḍ Darśana one? Whoa. Whoa. This orthodox Hindu perspective is known for its meticulous focus on logic and reason.

[18:06] Brad: Need like the Jeopardy music. Yeah, for sure. This is hopefully you will see an upgraded version of this game later in the semester.

[18:16] Student 48: Like my spring break, yeah.

[18:17] Brad: Sweet. Gemini just Gemini just released their code assist for all free for all users. Yeah. Yeah, as of yesterday, yeah. Yeah?

[18:33] Student 49: We steal?

[18:34] Brad: What? Oh right. No, whose turn is it? Yeah, it's y'all's, right? (Team 18) Yeah. Any answer? Yeah? Three seconds. Okay. Uh, okay. I see two or three hands. Just two? All right, y'all want to play do rock paper scissors?

[18:55] Student 50: Sure.

[18:57] (Students play rock paper scissors - Student 51 wins)

[19:11] Student 51 (Team 13): Nyāya?

[19:12] Brad: Good. (Point for Team 13)

[19:13] Student 52: It's kind of a guess, but uh, Vedānta?

[19:16] Brad: No. Was that what you were going to guess it?

[19:20] Student 52: No, we have another one.

[19:21] Brad: We have another one.

[19:22] Student 51 (Team 13): We guessed Mīmāṃsā.

[19:24] Brad: Nope. No one else? Okay. Nyāya. Nyāya.

Game Round 2 (Teams 18-11)

[19:24] Brad: It is team 18's turn again.

[19:44] Student 53: Is it like snake... Oh, it's...

[19:47] Brad: 18. Yeah. Going backwards now.

[19:58] Student 47 (Team 18): Who is she one?

[20:01] Brad: Who is she one?

[20:02] Student 47 (Team 18): Yeah.

[20:03] Brad: Oh, they're doing... She kicked Mahīṣāsura's butt so hard that he came out of his own mouth.

[20:14] Student 54: Wait, what's that girl?

[20:16] Brad: It's the Who is she?

[20:38] Student 57: Was I close?

[20:39] Brad: No.

[20:42] Student 58: Wait, is it with a B?

[20:45] Brad: No.

[20:46] Student 59: Maybe another one?

[20:48] Brad: Five seconds.

[20:52] Student 47 (Team 18): Go for it.

[20:53] Student 60: I think so.

[20:54] Brad: Okay?

[20:55] Student 47 (Team 18): You got a name.

[20:56] Brad: Okay? I see Andrea and I see Ruby. Uh okay, you want me to do? I see three hands. You want me to do dice roll? I'll put the... Two.

[21:15] Student 61: Who's two?

[21:16] Brad: Uh 12. It's 12. 12?

[21:18] Student 19 (Team 12): No. 12 doesn't have a guess.

[21:20] Brad: Wait, yeah, we wait, we can... Yeah, I guess.

[21:22] Student 19 (Team 12): Mahīṣāsura?

[21:24] Brad: Huh?

[21:24] Student 19 (Team 12): Mahīṣāsura?

[21:25] Brad: No. Uh one, 11.

[21:29] Student 62: Is that us?

[21:31] Brad: They're 11. Or 15. Okay. No? Uh, 17?

[21:38] Student 41 (Team 17): No, we only have...

[21:40] Brad: 14?

[21:44] Student 63: We're closer than three.

[21:46] Brad: 15?

[21:51] Student 30 (Team 15): Vishnu?

[21:51] Brad: No. Yeah, I did. Uh, what what's your what's your Devī is not specific enough.

[22:03] Student 65: Wait, Devī... half point?

[22:05] Brad: We do half point? We give them half point?

[22:09] Student 66: Devī Mahāmāyā?

[22:10] Brad: No. Okay. The answer is Durgā. Durgā. Okay, 17.

[22:31] Student 41 (Team 17): Krishna?

[22:36] Brad: Bāla Kṛṣṇa, often called Makhan Chor because he loves this particular food.

[22:41] Student 41 (Team 17): Butter. Obviously, yes, of course.

[22:45] Brad: Butter. (Point for Team 17) Um... 16.

[22:58] Student 34 (Team 16): Maybe we just do...

[23:02] Brad: What? Oh, is that us?

[23:04] Student 34 (Team 16): We'll go Sanskrit four, word for one.

[23:12] Brad: These Okay, let's let's bring the level down a little bit. These These Guys, come on. I don't mind you talking, just keep it quieter. These philosophical dialogues are also referred to as Vedānta because they are at the end of the Veda.

[23:41] Student 67: We're in Q.P.

[23:42] Student 34 (Team 16): Upaniṣad?

[23:44] Brad: Good. (Point for Team 16)

[23:57] Brad: Okay. 15, yeah. You're 15? Yeah.

[24:08] Student 30 (Team 15): He just won. Sacred Text Sanskrit 3.

[24:16] Brad: One of the two great Indian epics. This one is about an avatar of Vishnu who rescues his wife Sītā from the ten-headed demon named Rāvaṇa.

[25:04] Brad: Need an answer, yeah. Okay. Anybody know it? Anybody steal? No? No one? Do you know either of the epics?

[25:28] Student 69: Is the other one like the lion man...

[25:31] Brad: No, no. Uh-uh. You're thinking of another avatar. That's yeah. No, the Rāmāyaṇam.

[25:43] Student 70: All right, we'll do six.

[25:45] Brad: Where 14, yeah.

[25:48] Student 25 (Team 14): All right, we'll do six for sacred text Sanskrit edition.

[25:51] Brad: Six, okay. Sacred Hindu text that tells stories, legends, and myths about gods. The category of texts. So a category of Hindu texts that tells stories, legends, and myths.

[26:10] Student 71: You have it?

[26:11] Student 25 (Team 14): It was on our quiz.

[26:31] Brad: Five seconds.

[26:35] Student 73: No, go for it.

[26:36] Student 74: Rocky?

[26:37] Brad: No. Uh, I see three hands. Why do I keep putting it in my pocket? Eight, we don't even have an eight. Oh yeah, we do have an eight. 18?

[26:51] Student 47 (Team 18): No.

[26:52] Brad: No? Three? Uh, 18 again? 15?

[26:58] Student 30 (Team 15): Purāṇa?

[26:59] Brad: Yeah. (Point for Team 15)

[27:24] Brad: Where Wait, where are we now?

[27:25] Student 75: 13.

[27:26] Student 76: 14, now it's 13.

[27:29] Brad: 13? Yeah, right? Yeah, yeah, that's right. Yeah. That's right. 13. Yep. Go ahead.

[27:32] Student 77: What do we want?

[27:36] Student 21 (Team 13): What would be like give me top two?

[27:40] Student 78 (Team 13): Do you like three?

[27:41] Student 21 (Team 13): Yeah.

[27:42] Student 78 (Team 13): Okay, we'll do we'll do Greek three.

[27:46] Brad: Okay. This academic word with Greek etymology refers to the study of salvation and the means to achieve salvation.

[27:55] Student 79: Like two questions ago.

[28:07] Brad: Hold on.

[28:14] Student 80: Redemption?

[28:18] Brad: 10 seconds.

[28:27] Brad: Say it. I it looks like there's two people ready, right? Two people ready? You want to do rock paper scissors?

[28:37] Student 81 (Team 16): Soteriology?

[28:40] Brad: There you go. (Point for Team 16)

[28:52] Brad: 12? (Checking team order)

[28:56] Student 19 (Team 12): Yeah, let's do Who is she?

[28:58] Brad: Who is she?

[28:59] Student 19 (Team 12): Six.

[29:00] Brad: Who she? There's only four.

[29:02] Student 19 (Team 12): Okay. Four.

[29:03] Brad: According to Proverbs 8, this is the only... Are you kidding me? According to Proverbs 8, she was there before the creator God spoke a word.

[29:15] Student 19 (Team 12): Wisdom.

[29:18] Brad: Yeah. I'll give you wisdom. Yeah. (Point for Team 12)

[29:33] Brad: 11? (Checking team order - should be 11)

[29:35] Student 10 (Team 11): Can we get a double turn out of this? (Seems confused about order/points)

[29:38] Brad: (Correcting) 11, (Student 10's team)? We got we got a four though. (Referring to category number?)

[29:44] Brad: They're all worth one point.

[29:48] Student 10 (Team 11): We do Ṣaḍ Darśana 3.

[29:52] Brad: There it is. This orthodox Hindu perspective is known for its meticulous focus on the Karmakāṇḍa, also known as the Brāhmaṇas, which describe rituals that are to be done.

[30:07] Student 10 (Team 11): Mīmāṃsā?

[30:08] Brad: Yeah. (Point for Team 11)

[30:17] Brad: Uh, 16? (Re-checking order, seems confused, should be back to 18 now? No, going 18->11, so 11 was last, now 18 again? Let's assume the order stated 11->18 then 18->11 is followed. Last was 11. Next should be 18. But Brad says 16? Let's follow Brad's call for now.)

[30:24] Student 34 (Team 16): Sanskrit 1.

[30:30] Brad: This word signifies the ultimate and absolute reality, which can either be impersonal, Nirguṇa, or personal, Saguṇa.

[30:39] Student 34 (Team 16): Brahman?

[30:40] Brad: Yeah. (Point for Team 16) That one was almost too easy, wasn't it?

[30:44] Student 83: Okay.

[30:48] Brad: 17, I mean, 17. (Correcting self, following the 18->11 sequence after 16)

[30:57] Brad: What did Krishna do after the water polluting snake named Kāliya bit Krishna in his tender parts?

[31:15] Brad: I just mean how did he kill the snake? How did he... He didn't kill the snake. But what did he do to the snake?

[31:19] Student 41 (Team 17): Did he like pull it real long?

[31:22] Brad: No.

[31:23] Student 85: What are your names?

[31:24] Brad: No.

[31:27] Student 86: Allegation?

[31:28] Brad: Skipped it? No.
