For a sage (muni) wishing to ascend to discipline (yoga), action (karma) is said to be the cause. For him, having ascended to discipline (yoga), tranquility (śama) is said to be the cause.
Action is the means for a sage who seeks to mature in discipline; tranquility is the means for one who is mature in discipline.
(3) For the silent sage who would climb [the ladder of] spiritual exercise works are said to be the means; but for that same [sage] who has reached the state of integration (yoga) they say quiescence is the means.
6.3 For the sage who wishes to ascend to (Dhyāna-) yoga, action is said to be the means. For that person, when he has ascended to (Dhyāna- )yoga, inaction alone is said to be the means.
6.3 Action is said to be the means for the sage who seeks to climb the heights of Yoga; but when he has climbed the heights of Yoga, tranquility is said to be the means.
6.3 For a sage who wishes to attain to Yoga, action is said to be the means; for the same sage who has attained to Yoga, inaction (quiescence) is said to be the means.
